Solar panel cleaning is a critical maintenance task that directly impacts the energy output, efficiency, and return on investment of a photovoltaic system. Over time, airborne dust, pollen, bird droppings, pollution, and general grime form a physical barrier over the glass, preventing sunlight from properly reaching the solar cells. This debris accumulation—often referred to as “soiling”—can cause a noticeable decrease in energy production, frequently reducing efficiency by 10% to 25% depending on the region and environmental conditions.

To clean solar panels safely and effectively without voiding manufacturer warranties or causing physical damage, proper techniques and timing must be observed. Panels should ideally be washed during early morning or late evening hours when the equipment is cool to avoid thermal shock, which can crack the glass if cold water contacts hot surfaces mid-day. A soft-bristle brush, squeegee, or micro-fiber cloth paired with low-pressure water—preferably deionized or filtered to prevent hard water mineral spots—is best for removing stubborn dirt. Abrasive pads, pressure washers, and harsh chemical detergents should always be avoided because they scratch the surface glass and strip away delicate anti-glare layers.
